Thompson's Private Garden,
Ulverstone, Tasmania
31st January 2003

It was a sunny afternoon at our campsites
by the river, relaxing by the barbecue and chatting about life
and love. Most of the family (and its extensions) were there,
so of course we were all happy to throw together a few 'theoretical
wedding' ideas for us, the still un-engaged couple.
"Well, it could be held at my old dad's garden, with
the creek running through..."
"Your father can decorate the gazebo there and make it look
nice..."
"You'd look quite dashing in a top hat, and that beautiful
pirate-type shirt..."
"Of course we'd need to check that that raw-silk dress is
still okay..." etc etc.
All these ideas flowed easily and merged beautifully, and most
were agreed upon without much hesitation. "Yeah, well
that all sounds pretty good. Maybe one day..."

A few months later while walking downtown,
with memories of theoretical weddings still floating around in
our minds, we see a simple but elegant engagement ring waiting
in the jeweller's window.
"Well we DID 'organise' a wedding, and it's been discussed
more than once before..." were the general feelings
of Miss.
"We'll see. It's a big step, but you know I'm not opposed
to the idea at all..." was the 'nonchalant' reply of
Mister.
And of course, Mister snuck down to the jeweller and bought the
ring with little hesitation.

The marriage proposal. It's one of the moments in life that you always remember
- so it had to be special. Had to happen at just the right time,
just the right place, so I carried the ring box in my pocket
waiting for the right moment.
A week passed.
Another week passed.
Finally one night, after an argument which resulted in Miss angrily
going to bed, I knew the right moment wouldn't come in time.
So I snuck into the dark bedroom and kneeled beside the bed,
ring box opened, and asked Miss to turn on the bedside lamp.
I haven't often seen her face turn from angry to happy so quickly...
and she even said yes.
But talking about it after, it seems that
Miss had visited the jeweller and noticed the ring had gone,
and guessed where it had gone to... and from memory, the long
wait was the cause of the discontent that led up to the argument.
Figures.
At least I was right about one thing - the proposal is a moment
you'll always remember.

Fast-forward to 18 months later, and amazingly
enough, the riverside camping barbeque stories became a reality
with little to no variations from the original ideas.
Mister did indeed look resplendent in his open-neck silk shirt
with top hat and cane, Miss was simply beautiful in her timeless
raw silk dress with her rose bouquet... and the Page-boy sons
and Best man, with Flower-girl neices and Bridesmaid, matched
us perfectly - making a classic and very beautiful bridal party.
The final result? A lovely wedding in the beautiful garden setting (which to our luck fell in a sunny day, between days of rainfall), and everyone attending was overjoyed with such a wonderful ceremony.
Of course, the laughter and merriment that followed at the
reception goes without saying - and Mister didn't even mess up any
of his speeches!

The day was captured eternally in beautiful
pictures by our friend and photographer Ben Huisman, whose photos
you can see adorning this page. The musical accompaniment was
chosen by both Mrs and myself, including the awe-inspiring Processional
theme and the Reception music tracks that filled in for our live
Band during breaks. And our well-deserved honeymoon was a wonderful week in
the sunny Gold Coast.
And in closing, now that the honeymoon's over? Well, the fact
that we're still sharing our life and love together, and happily
expecting the birth of our first child, must mean that we were
married for all the right reasons.
To my family, friends and relations - I
give you Shelley and Jesse's Wedding.
